Ok a little history. Rocky is a yr old. He has been crated since 8 wks when we brought him home. I want to teach him to come in ,from the back yard ,at night and settle down to sleep uncrated. At this point he comes in and wants to run and play
while everyone else ( 7 other dogs) are trying to settle down for the night. He eventually goes to the back door and asks to go back out. How do I teach him sleeping in the house with us is better than sleeping outside alone and that playtime is for daytime outside? Thanks

I know what works for me is to change things up for a few weeks (months?) to break bad habits my pup may have gotten into.
So joining some fun dog classes (clearly agility would be the best ) with the driving/socialization/homework/EXERCISE that involves to engage and wear my dogs out.Taking the calendar out and actually planning socialization and exercise outside the home. Opportunities that involve a large block of time, driving to a new place, meeting new people/dogs, and lot's of exercise. Then adding a dog bed to my bedroom with me training a 'go lay down' at the end of the night RIGHT BEFORE I CRAWL INTO BED and giving a treat while the pup is in the bed won't hurt. Part of a real 'night time routine' that my dogs know and calms them. I also read for a bit before going to sleep so that allows me to make sure the dog stays down in their place for awhile so it shows that is a 'quiet time' not a WHOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! time.

thanks for the video....beautiful dogs! I love taking my 3 hiking and swimming. Can't wait for warmer weather. Rocky is going through a startle stage right now though and last time hiking he charged a biker
Might have to hike on leash for awhile. Do you have to bathe your babies after they swim? I do...can't stand the stinky wet dog smell lol

We haven't been to dog classes in awhile ,had some surgery and the Holidays....I do reinforce everyday though. He has to earn all the good stuff. He has seen numerous bicycles ,I have 3 nephews. I think it was just that this biker came around a corner and startled him. Startled me too. He was quiet. We were out in the middle of nowhere listening to the birds and then oops there he was. Rocky did obey me though but I do need to step up training and exposure to different scenarios.

@Kennajo....NO...the human contact is not about the yard or how much.....its a puppy craves human contact, so that WHEN he first comes into a house he is going to want to have interaction(sometimes known as play) for quite a while to have this contact. I read your post to say that you want him trained to come in the house and go to sleep. I'm saying when he comes into the house he is going to want to interact with people. Especially a puppy, which craves this contact. If I read your intentions wrong, I apologize....but if I read right about what you want, I stand by it being an unreal expectation for a puppy to do.....cream and sugar!...please...lol

No I don't expect him to go right to sleep. I do however expect him to follow house rules ,which is to play nicely......not bouncing off the walls or climbing the furniture. Play is fine...we enjoy watching this 75 lb pup playing with our chihuahua ,boston terrier(pup)& pomeranian. He even plays with one of the cats.
He just turns into a wild man and that's what I want to change.
