What a great wait and recall....Stella should be so obedient! And I like the training by the open door...something I will incorporate. She waits and sits when I go out but that training would certainly step it up a notch...

EXACTLY !

Truthfully, this isn't just about training the dog. It's about training your children AND working on your dog.

Is there a door the kids can use that if the dog does go out there is another entry control area? Like using the side door to the garage so the dog will be stuck in the garage? Or a door to the deck with the deck having a gate before the steps?

I have a hyperactive 7 year old, that's a bit difficult. My 12 and 17 year old are fine, and they also work the dog with me.
It's the 7 year old, that has a tendency to be more concerned about her friends playing out front, than closing the door behind her.

****

This morning we had our first snow. Maybe 5 inches.

KIRA PASSED A HUGE TEST!!

Beautiful, snowy, early morning. Had her off lease on the local hiking trails. All of a sudden, her hacks were up, growling, and in a flash she took off after a cat. I yelled KIRA DOWN!!. She stopped on the spot, and dropped.
Don't want to sound like a mush, but watching her react to her hard work, gave me chills down my spine.

definitely have the 12 yr old and the 17 yr oldwork the dog.
training isn't hard work for you or Kira. training is a matter
of being consistent and training properly. i get the chills no matter what
my dog does.

This is what I'm talking about....

I was doing something in the backyard, and Kira was alone in the kitchen area.

One of my children ran outside to see her friend, and leaves the front door open. I must have said it a thousand times, and I've expressed a concern about Kira running out numerous times.

Well anyway.... It looks as if Kira understands what I'm teaching her. She had every reason to run outside, and chose to hold her ground

I walk in from the yard, and see her just laying there watching patiently for my daughter to come back. I had to snap a pic

It's like talking to the wall

So what you're saying is, that a 7-month old German Shepherd is more trainable than a 7-year old human?
