Default laying down to sit

My pup is doing really good with sit assuming she is walking around, or standing up. But if she is laying down and you tell her to sit she wont. Any suggestions on teaching this?
We have been clicker training.

Sit has been the first thing I thought her, I did not teach her anything else yet.

She doesn't know she can sit from a down. Lure her head up until she is sitting and then click and treat when she comes up into a sit.

Use treats, and hold them up above her head so she has to look up and back to look at them. She ought to pop up to get a treat.

^ What they said. To you, sit means one thing - butt on floor. To your puppy, sit from a stand and sit from a down are two different things because she's learned that sit means to drop her butt from a standing position, not to come up into a sit from a down. Luring with a treat is perfect for helping her to generalize the command. You'll also need to teach her that sit in front of you is the same as sit at your side in heel position, and sit across the room from you, and sit when you're standing up or sitting on the couch or laying on the floor while you're training her.

i agree with luring her into a sit. we did the same thing with our dog, using a hand motion too. open palm face up and move it upwards. we used "up" for the command. and once she learns that you can have her do doggy push ups. up, down, up, down!

I personally wouldn't do that. A sit should be a sit regardless of what the dog was doing or the position they were in prior to the command. If you use two different commands for sit based on whether they were standing or laying down at the time it may confuse the dog and delay generalization of the sit command to all circumstances.

you raise a good point. he always automatically went into a sit position from a down when we said it, so i guess we never thought to teach him any other way. hmm..i'm curious to see now if he will do a sit from a down if i tell him to sit. never thought of it that way. guess i just outed myself as a green owner

From a down I use "sit up" for them to go into a sit position. Used a treat above their nose to entice them up. Didn't take long for them to catch on at all.

10 week old puppy here. I also used the lure of the treat to guide her from a down position to a sit position. She figured out sit in 3 attempts and down in 4 attempts. The down to a sit was a little more challenging but was figured out in a day, if that.

Now we are trying to work on the here command a little better. She is pretty good with here in the house, not so good outside because there is more to explore, especially now that she if beginning to feel comfortable in her new home.
