I've had my pup about 2 weeks now-- at first he was either with me 100% of the time or in his kennel. The last few days though he has wanted to be outside with my older (turns 2 in March) dog. They both LOVE each-other. We have a fenced in yard that he is very safe in. Is it okay for him to be outside playing with our other dog for a couple hours at a time without me? (I am still supervising and listing from inside, but not directly WITH him). Is there anything wrong with him being outside without me? Would it be better to just kennel him at those times? It is hard because he does love it outside and our other dog loves the play time too. What do you think?

Personally I think that's too long. I would start with 15-20 min at the most and see how he does. Also, there's so much little training and bonding to be done that I can't imagine leaving him alone that long without me (obviously unless I'm working or gone). And if I'm gone, I would put him in the crate. Too young to be trusted alone; it's not like your other dog can tell him no or stop him from getting into something or hurting himself.

There are so many things he could get into without you knowing. I had a friend whose dog died from choking on a pine cone. If she would have been outside with him, there's a chance she could have saved him!

I think that a 12 week old puppy should not be unsupervised with an adult dog (unless it is the pup's dam). Anything can happen, and without even trying a large dog can hurt a puppy.

For perspective, I'm not one of those "never let a dog play outside unsupervised, they might sneeze and not be able to wipe their own nose" types, but with that said, I don't let puppies play outside unsupervised and definitely wouldn't let them play unsupervised with other dogs. I'd wait at least a few more months and I'd check in on them regularly even at that point. Wait till it's warm enough to leave some windows open so you can hear what's going on out there.
