Kira did something very funny tonight. But at the same time, she showed me that she doesn't have to obey her commands, if she doesn't' want to.
I'm in the family room, and going through her commands. She was in a wild mood (been raining here a few days), and I wanted to give her some mental stimulation. I was doing the usual sit, stay, down, etc... For the past few days, I've been teaching her to go into her crate on command. She'll go into the crate, but she never seems too excited about it, whereas, she'll do anything else for a treat, otherwise. As I was going through her paces, I said "crate". She looked at me and RAN into another part of the house, and refused to come back. She sat under the dining room table, and wouldn't move. I realize that all training should be fun, but how would you handle that incident? *** Don't tell anyone, but I thought it was brilliantly cute** |

Ahhh well I asked about that with Beau who has decided "crate" means run to the fridge while I collect a peice of puppy crack to give him when he goes into HIS crate.....it was like.....go ahead and bribe them for awhile to come. I have been known to wave it under his nose long enough to lure him in.
Now to get him inside after playing ball, I sometimes need to toss the peice of food in the door as he is getting to like the ball more than food.

i would made my dog go to his crate. then i would have waited
a few minutes and realeashed him from his crate. then a few mimutes later i would have said "go to your crate". if he didn't go i would have made go tot his crate. i would have reapeated the exercise again. i would have ended it on a positive note (dog going to his crate).

I still would have caught her, put her in the crate, left her there for 15 or 30 seconds, and let her out again. That way she learns that she DOES have to crate when I tell her to, but it's not necessarily a terrible place where she has to stay for hours. *Hey look! I went in my crate and got to go right out again!*
