Default jumping up on Humans

Hello, my GSD female named Shay is about 4-5 months old.. so far, she is for the most part house trained, she will sit but where the problem is jumping up on me and my girlfriend. It occurs whenever we leave and come home, or when we let her inside. shes getting big enough to where it sometimes hurts when she jumps on us because of her claws. and since it hurts, its hard to ignore and keep on going like most things ive read say to do. When i see her running to us, i will command her to sit and she will do so but only for a couple of seconds, then shes back to jumping up on us. any help on this would be appreciated

For conversation sake, tell us EXACTLY what you do when you come home. Not what you're trying to do, but what you've done in the past.

well before she could sit on command, i would just ignore her for a bit, then go back outside and play with her and such. then when she could sit, when she started running at us, i would command her to sit, she would do so, then i would reach down, praise her and start petting her, but as soon as i stop petting, shes back to jumping

I think what I'm asking for is what is your behavior when you come home? Is your dog outside when you come home? Do you have to pass through your dog to get into your house? How long is your dog waiting on you to come home?

She is always outside when we are gone, and we are usually only gone a couple hours at a time.. and when we are at work, i work mornings, and my girlfriend works afternoons and evenings. so there is almost always someone home. and yes when we do come home we have to go through her to get in the door cuz she is usually at the car waiting for us to get out and start jumping on us.

I threw my leg up to block her and held my hands up so she couldn't touch them while ignoring her. Once she stopped jumping, she got attention. It took her awhile but she figured it out.

But at 4 years old, she will still body slam me when she's excited.

Every time she jumps on you, make her sit. Over and over. It might seem like you're getting nowhere, but one day soon it will click in her head.

Her hello time might be longer than yours. If you pet her for a few extra seconds, then does she seem content and greet properly?

There you have it! She is making first contact when you get out of your car. It is difficult to ignore her (physically) when she is so very excited that your home! She rewards herself by any reaction you provide, even if it's throwing your arms up to protect yourself.

Does she like to play fetch? Does she like toys? If you can't physically ignore her, try having a toy in your vehicle. When you get home, get out of your car with the toy. Do not say anything else to her but 'sit'. As soon as you get a sit, throw the toy. Give her a reward for sitting that doesn't include her self rewarding by jumping on you.

But - don't cheat and run for cover when she runs after the toy. And don't cheat by rolling your window down and tossing the toy giving you a chance to run for cover. You've created a monster, it's up to you to fix it. Give her the command "sit!" Wait till she does before you offer the toy. She is still going to jump and worm and pounce. Don't speak. Don't offer any reaction that she might find as a reward to her jumping. Eventually she is going to sit. Say "YES! and throw the toy! Reward at that time. You'll find the more you do this, the quicker the sit response will come.
