Default Need Help Housetraining!!

Hi all- I have a new puppy, about 3 months old now, and I am having the hardest time with housetraining. When I take him to back door and go out with him, I say " go pee pee or poop poop", he does and I praise him when he does. so now, he knows that when we go out, he has to pee/poop in the yard. I have sort of learned his "poop schedule" ie ~15 min after meals. THe problem is that he doesn't let me know when he has to potty on those times when I am not watching him constantly or those times when the poop. I am trying the bell on the door, but he thinks that is his toy now! what to do???

I have gone through the house training stage many times and the only advice I can give from my experience is this. Whe they are In the house at twelve weeks, you have to be watching them at all times. besides pooping, mine always were inclined to eat Anything they could wrap their jaws around. Good luck. The puppy phase goes by to quick!

When we first got Sheldon, we took him out EVERY hour. Then every two hours. Now he's on every four hours (except at night). He didn't quite understand at first, we think that has something to do with the fact that we got him at a puppy store...(Learned my lesson. Never again. I like to think I rescued him) He was in a cage that he pooped and peed and slept in...I'm really thankful he doesn't potty in his crate. You just gotta be diligent and watch him like a hawk. They get the hang of it soon enough =3

when you cannot watch him, crate him.

Crate training is the easiest way.

Tether him to you. Get a leash and put a hook on the end that'll attach to your beltloop. If you're on the computer or sitting or whatever, tether him right there with you. Every mistake in the house means possibly two more mistakes. This is hard work! but it'll pay off in spades. Allow no "mistakes" !!! Heck I even drilled into my woodwork to put in eyelets so I had a tether to hook to when I was in that room.

This is a hook attached to an eyelet attached to my (homemade) gate. The double sided hooks can be pretty helpful. You can find all kinds of them at any home improvement store.

Lot of good ideas, crate training, tethering.
What works best is setting him free and watching him and CATCHING HIM AT IT.
Then say NO and quickly carry him out and praise for success.
My dog is 2+(years) and she has never asked to go out. She knows that we will let her out within a reasonable period. She house trained in a couple days with only one mistake of each type.

Thanks for some good ideas. Hadn't thought of tethering him to me. Otherwise, I have been doing what you all say...taking him out every couple hours, telling him no when he messes up and taking him directly outside with praise.

My puppy was I think about 4.5 months before trained. We did move & that definitely set him back a few weeks. I caught him lots in the act & would pick him up & bring him outside because he would usually smell just a little before going, but we did miss lots too - sometimes we just could not get to him in time and sometimes he simply gave us no warning. It seemed one day it just "clicked" with him.
