My husband and I would like to change our dogs name. It is too close to one of her commands and we feel it may be confusing her. Do I just start addressing her by the new name I chose? Is there a proper way to do this?
(Also, there is a different issue with the name so we are definitely changing it) Thanks for any advice. She is 3 month old btw. |

If she is only 3 months old, I would just start using her new name and she'll figure it out.

It's easy! They seem to learn it very quickly. You can start by using old name/new name together and calling her to you for a treat, and phase out old name. Or you can just start with the new name and treat and she will build an association with it, at that age, very quickly. I change foster's names all the time - my current foster was named Mindy for 9 years and I changed it to Mila. When they hear you enjoying their name, and the happiness in your voice when you say it, they respond. Good luck!

It will be fairly easy. Over time I've always called my dogs/cats by different names. I think there is even a thread on here somewhere about all the "nicknames" your dog has. Saki, my golden, will answer to Saki, Sassy-brat, Sassy-girl and sometimes even "hey you, dog that doesn't want to listen!". LOL
Think about when a person adopts an older dog at a shelter where it was a stray... the dog eventually learns it's new name that the family has given him.

Dogs catch on to name changes really easily... when we foster, we always change the dog's name, and they're responding to the new one in no time. Even older dogs.

Not hard at all. Dogs don't know that the name is "them," they just know it's a word that means, "Hey you pay attention to this."
Sooo. . . name, treat. name, treat. name, treat. Lather, rinse, and repeat.

My two respond to nick names all the time. As a matter of fact, Zisso responds better to Bubba than to Zisso....LOL Nadia responds to my voice rather than any name really. I would have changed her name when I adopted her but couldn't think of what I wanted to change it too.
