Default Training Treats?

I read many threads that speak to training and to treat and praise to encourage the dog so my question is your spending a small fortune on quality dog food, what about treats? What do you all use for treats?

i buy the training treats from petco or petsmart. I also cut them in half when i get home because a training treat should actually be about the size of a pea instead of the size most come in. Petco sells TRAIN ME! Training treats that i've found all dogs seem to love. I actually use a variety but that makes up the majority.

I discovered pot roast. So now I buy a cheap roast and cook it and cut it up. Ends up being way cheaper than any of the treats you can buy, he loves it and it lasts awhile! Hot dogs on occasion as well, but I try and avoid them - not for any reason other than I think they're gross. He loves them, but ewww. We tried a ton of the store bought treats and nothing worked as well as the roast!

1. Freeze dried beef liver - large container is about 30 bucks. I cut the pieces down, lasts forever. Very good value.

2. Dehydrated beef lung - large bag is about 10 bucks. I cut the pieces down, lasts forever. Very good value.

3. Thin sliced top round steak from the grocery. It's about $5 a lb. I sear both sides to medium well and cut into 1/4" squares. I usually get a pound every couple weeks and eat half of it for lunch. The other half gives me a couple days of very high value training treats for both pups.

lmao so glad I'm not alone in the junk I train with. Honestly unless you're doing an entire bag in one sitting I dont care so much about the treats. I give her an awesome diet (shes raw fed) that some junk food I just don't care. Before he deployed my husband trained Jinx to put her toys away with jelly beans (granted she was 4 months and went through about a half bag at 10pm then I was left alone with her) I usually use purina moist n meaty they dont crumble in the treat bag and are a good size (even break them smaller as we go) plus cheap. Use natural balance rolls, I use real meats and cheese heck yesterday I taught her with pieces of lettuce out of my salad lol. It all varies with us but basically anything works for her (have I mentioned how much I LOVE food drive?)

London broil - you can buy it cheap and it cooks down in a crock pot to something you can tear apart with your fingers. It is actually my favorite meat for a pot roast because it is so lean and has good flavor.

Depending on the activity, we use hot dogs, kibble, Bil Jac frozen or the Bil Jac little liver treats, or freeze dried liver.

For puppies I like cheese, especially sharp cheddar. It is soft, easily eaten and can be cut into tiny puppy sized treats. My adults I use dried beef, chicken or pork treats that I make myself.
