Default How to teach to "put toys back"?

Kira has a bucket of bones and toys in the corner of our room. Whenever she gets bored, she goes over to the bucket, and grabs something to play with. So far, it's been a successful way of keeping her away from pillows, etc.

We would like to teach her to pick up her toys, and put them back in the bucket on command.

Can someone share a method to help us teach her this?

Oh yes please someone share the wisdom on this one! I've tried teaching our golden and she just doesn't get why you would put a toy away and stop playing with it... Maybe Knuckles will be the one who picks up after her!

Ya I have been trying to teach mine the same thing.... no such luck so far. I can't even get her to pick it up for me.. Anxiously awaiting details on how to accomplish this (I'm a little tired of stubbing my toes on bones in the middle of the night LOL)

Seriously?.......you should PM Hillary (on this board)...she can and does teach her dogs to pick up ANYTHING and place it where she specifies. But she trains Service Dogs.....and this is just one of the tasks that she teaches her own dog(s).....she freakin amazes me! LOL!

I have taught my dog to do this with an outside bucket of toys. He knows that I control which toy he plays with(he can only play with one at a time). I just pointed to the bucket and dropped it in myself a few times. He learned that if he did that on command, he could have another toy. I tell him to leave it when we are through playing.

here are some videos to check out...

its about back chain teaching. The first video explains it very well IMO. I just learned about it in my Animal Behavior College Course. The second video is Tab285 who has several great and helpful videos.

I haven't watched the videos here yet but with Jinx my husband taught her to pick up on command at around 3-4 months old. It was his parting gift before he left for deployment lol. All he did was set a toy on the floor right at her feet and as soon as she touched it he marked it and rewarded her. Kept doing it whenever her mouth touched the toy then he waited til she touched it harder and just kept waiting her out for her to offer it more if she fully mouthed it and picked it up off the ground she got heavily rewarded then she learned when we set the toy down to pick it back up then we rewarded and put the cue "pick up" to it now when we point and say pick up she goes to whatever is in that direction and picks it up then when she was holding it I walked to her toy box holding the treat over the middle of it when she leaned forward to sniff the treat I told her "out" then heavily rewarded for it getting dropped in the box.
