Default Leave it. (videos)

My wife is working on "leave it" with Kira.

I was wondering if there's a method to perfecting the "ok to take it" command.

In the first video, she says OK, and Kira takes it. But that's not always the case.

In the second video, she 'gives" the food to her after giving her the Ok to take it.

oh my god, she is so stinken cute, watching her 'watch' that food LOL..

I think even tho she kinda gave her the piece of kibble in the second, that's "ok" in my opinion, since what you want is for her to "leave it" and she did in both)

However, I'd tell her to try waiting it out, when she gives her that "ok" to take it, see if she goes for it...

She is so cute. And its so funny everything you post is stuff we are going through to. We finally got leave it down to. But with isis when we say ok we try and not give it to her, but instead let her take it. eventually she will catch on. Does the leave it work on everything else with her? For instance if she is chewing on a shoe and you so say leave it, will she leave it? Cause isis wont.... Wondering if I should be giving her treats for leaving other objects as well.

I've always taught 'leave it' by not allowing the pup to take the treat she's leaving but rewarding her with a treat from the other hand. Kira is so adorable!

That's interesting.
Can others chime in on this approach?

It sounds as if it's enforcing the "leave it" and never touch it it.
Kinda makes sense to me.

I think it's a good idea.

In many cases, "leave it" means never touch it. If she grabs a shoe, and you say leave it, I wouldn't want her to expect to EVER get permission to touch it.

If I use the "leave it" command, the dog does not get the item. But - I do like to teach impulse control, which is more of an implied leave it. In that case, if the dog stops mugging me and ignores the food in my hand, they get the food in my hand! Halo ate much of her lunch kibble with this game:

It's not technically a leave it exercise because no command is given. It's more about teaching the dog that until and unless they're specifically released to take something they are not allowed to. Very, very useful.
