Default leash biting

What can I do to discourage my puppy to bite his leash?

We recently switched from a small chain leash to a nylon leash and now he seems to want to bite it all the time when on it. When I walk him by myself it is a problem, because we don't get very far.

I've read that he could be bored or too excited, or trying to control the person walking him. I was thinking of getting one of those things that go around his body so that the leash clips onto his back, but I also think he needs to get used to the normal collar around his neck with the leash. Any advise will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

That's a normal puppy activity and they usually drop it after a short while. My current dog never did it but my last dog did it off and on for several years. In her case it was just a sign of being happy to go on a walk. They usually drop it as soon as they are distracted and that's the end of it. If it bothers you, try to distract him or make him sit quietly until he is ready to go on. You could put the collar on in the house and let him drag it around frequently for short periods of time so that it becomes less important to him. I assume others will jump in and give better advice.

Thanks guys, he is ok with the leash and collar, but the nylon leash seems to be perfect for him to use as a teething toy. We switched back to the chain leash last night, and he only bit it once or twice. This morning I struggled again on my own. I tried again just now, and it was much better. We had a nice short walk. I am just worried that he will break a tooth or that this will be a problem later on, I must just be patient. We are starting formal puppy class on Sunday, so I am sure we will learn a lot. :-)

You probably won't be able to use the chain leash in class- the nylon or leather is much lighter and easier on your hands. I use a very thin leather lead so I can gather it into my hand easily. Good luck with class!
