what methods have you tried? Some dogs never learn it. Shasta learned speak easily but Riley doesnt get it. He will bark his fool head off at the door and anything he hears outside but he just doesnt understand the whole speak on command concept.

The method I heard was knowing what does make your dog bark and then doing that, rewarding him for barking and later on adding the cue "speak". Haven't tried it yet, though.

If there is ever anything that makes the puppy bark or make a sound, run in with over-abundant praise with "good speak" so an association between command word and sound can be made. After awhile of that, the pup may ramp up for more when prompted a lot.

It's what we did with Sheva and it worked. We are now working on "whisper".

we used that and it worked perfectly with kendra. She's a sucker for wanting to go outside or go for a ride, so we've taken that and she "tells us" (when we ask) if she wants something.

I'll ask her "do you want _____, tell me", and she'll happily bark her fool head off. Its funny to watch her bark at the door, then go huh??? when she realized it was a doorbell on tv, not ours. But she raises holy **** barking if anyone knocks or rings the doorbell, which is what I wanted to begin with. She's already been a deterrent for some of the snothead teenagers in our neighborhood.
