I just got my puppy (Friday, March 12) and need advice on potty training him. He has been pretty good so far and almost always asks to go outside. He immediately goes to the bathroom when he gets outside. The only accidents we have had are right after he drinks a lot of water. He drinks water like he's never drinken it before and then has to go pee every 10 minutes. I have started trying to monitor his water intake by putting it up after he has a little bit.. he won't stop drinking.. if it's there he's drinking the whole bowl. I don't want to dehydrate him but I don't know how much water to give him a day. Any help or advice would be amazing.

Well, I dont know if this is an relief, but MY new puppy does the same thing. Their kidneys havent developed yet, and therefor do not soak up a lot of water, so it goes through them like a sive. My vet told me yesterday that THAT wont change until 12-16 weeks as an average. Sometimes pups are potty trained by 10 weeks (or better even) but the exception proves the rule. He just cant hold it very long.

Still moniter his water intake, when you feel he has had enough then pick it up. He should go out once or twice an hour until he's like 10 to 12 weeks old and then you can do once every hour or even once every 2 hours, it depends.

There are times when you have to take your puppy out every ten minutes so that's what you do. The more active and awake they are, the more often they have to go out.
I do not limit water except I don't put water in the crate.

Sounds like you’re doing pretty good. Just keep it up and don’t get discouraged. He’s still just a little baby and like someone already said. He’s still developing.
I wouldn’t limit water either. I’ve always thought it best to keep fresh water available. I have a picture somewhere of my Dalton falling asleep on his water dish when he was 8-9 weeks old. He loved that water dish. And he was the fastest dog I’ve ever gone through potty training with. Just a matter of days is all it took him. Then it was up to me to pay attention to my puppy. |

Thank you guys very much, he has been doing a lot better lately. I think it was partially my worry and frustration that I thought I was doing something wrong. I appreciate all the support
Titan is doing just what an 8 week old pup should be doing
