Default New Issue with Extreme Danger~Need Help Please!!

Ok,
So now that Kaiya is bigger she can now reach the kitchen counters standing on her back legs. She's been doing this all day everyday as she has quickly learned that the kitchen counter is usually where the food is. I am very stern and consistent and always give an immediate "OFF!" when she does it. The rest of the family as well. She will always get down on command, but it only takes a few seconds or minutes before she does it again. I tried using treats as a reward for when she got down, but it has backfired. Now she uses it as a way to get treats. Meaning, "I know if I get up here and she tells me to get down, when I do, I'll get a treat." So, I stopped treating her and just using the stern command and hand signals. But the counter jumping is a continuous thing ALL day EVERY day.

Here's what frightens me. We have a flat top stove. And she will jump on this just as soon as the counter because food is often on here as well. When cooking, I WILL NOT leave the kitchen unless she goes with me. I am one of those that's sees the worst that can happen in every situation, and I see her jumping up to investigate what's on the stove, and pawing a frying pan or boiling pot of water and it flipping over onto her. The thought scares the **** outta me!!

The second part is that the DH IS NOT as careful as me. And though I have repeated it for years and years, because of the children, he will often cook things on the outer burners with the handles pointed outwards and filled to the brim with boiling water or grease and the stove on high. The children are older now and know better than to get close to the stove, but Kaiya, of course does not. I have NEVER fed her from the counters or while standing at the stove, but the smells alone always make her want to investigate. So what can I do?? What would be a more effective method to get her to stop jumping on the counters and stove?? The DH is off for the rest of the week and will be left home alone with her. And no matter what I say, I can't seem to fix his careless ways. So what can I do to keep Kaiya from seriously injuring herself??

Well... there's always the e-collar...of course I don't know the pros/cons to using it.

I for one would want to nip that in the butt as fast as possible.

I would consider gating her out of the kitchen or putting her on a leash so you can control her better.

I crate my puppies when I am cooking, and my older dogs know platz, I use that command to create a long down or a place command. I reward for being in a platz in the corner, and if they break and come where I don't want them, I put them back where they are supposed to be. Not sure how effective that would be since your pup is so small.

As soon as Sage was big enough to reach the top of the counter that was his favorite thing. One day I was cooking and Sage came running into the kitchen I caught him just as he jumped up but he still got his paw close enough to the burner to singe some fur. I started blocking him from the kitchen when i was cooking after that until we had build up a solid "leave it" and a "park it" command. He leaves me alone now, I still watch him like a hawk and he will sniff the air a bit I tell him to leave it and he'll go lay down in the living room and chew.

The crating is a good idea for keeping her safe. I guess I will have to do it until I can get her solid on staying off the counters. Did find a trick tonight while cooking. After reading a lot of positive reviews, I went out and got some of the Natural Balance Rolls. She loved it! I cut a bunch of small pieces and put her into a down stay in the middle of the kitchen. She only got up a few times, but the treats helped keep her there for longer than she's ever done. Was kinda hectic though, chopping vegetables, watching her, treat, praising, stirring, watching, treat, praising...lol. But seemed to be working. I guess as I continue to cook, and practice this, perhaps I can get her to stay longer between treats!

I agree with the crating. I already do this with Vida as soon as I go into the kitchen because I dont want her to snatch up something that I drop that may be harmful(again with the freaking onions..) and I HATE her begging.
my dad encourages it, though.

I really think you are missing what could be Kaiya's calling. Maybe she has the potential to be the first GSD Chef. She may just want to show you how she can make Barka-Q sandwiches or a Pupperoni Pawzza. Give her an apron and a chance and see what she does. Maybe she can even be the replacement for the guy on the ravioli cans and become "Chef GSD". Sorry for the humor, just couldn't resist.

I got Hope to stop counter surfing with a combination of of verbal reprimand, and making sure there was never ever anything on the countertop for her to get.

After a while she lost interest.

take some hot sauce and place it on some meat.
place the meat near the edge of the counter.
when i say hot sauce i don't mean the Supermarket
kind. you need to go to a specialty shop.

i have some hot that's so hot you can
dip a tooth pick in the bottle and rub it
on a slab of ribs and you might have
to rinse the sauce off of the ribs because it's so hot.
