my last GSD i taught him not to eat off the street
or from strangers hands usuing the hot sauce method. he learned quickly. Quote:

It is difficult to get a rewarding behavior like this stopped. I find that "off" is a form of reward itself in that my notorious Valkyrie finds attention rewarding. I have a gas stove so I understand the worry about stove, nevermind the rest of it. If it gives you any hope, it has diminished some with minimal attention from me or just quietly moving her off the counter.
Out of the kitchen and/or in the crate are good ideas that I use often although the baby gate is usually employed to keep her IN the kitchen and in sight. Crates are univerally wonderful things. ... |

I would get me a newpaper and roll it up and swat it in my hand or on the counter when she jumps up! They absolutely hate the sound of the paper hitting the hand or counter. It should stop it after a few repeats.

I found hot sauce quite effective with a Siberian Husky we had years ago. The only problem was that I couldn't put it on EVERYTHING that he might try to eat or chew up! But it certainly provided an aversive consequence, which is what is desired for potentially dangerous behavior as is described in this thread.
