However, I don't agree with the hot sauce idea. For one, that just seems cruel to me. Second, I think she'd be able to smell it and eventually she'll learn that when she smells that that she shouldn't lick it. Not to not jump on the counter. But that's just what I think.
But the issue isn't her eating food of the counter is it? Just counter surfing?

Just curious, do you own a GSD or any dogs? Have you trained any?

It is difficult to get a rewarding behavior like this stopped. I find that "off" is a form of reward itself in that my notorious Valkyrie finds attention rewarding. I have a gas stove so I understand the worry about stove, nevermind the rest of it. If it gives you any hope, it has diminished some with minimal attention from me or just quietly moving her off the counter.
Out of the kitchen and/or in the crate are good ideas that I use often although the baby gate is usually employed to keep her IN the kitchen and in sight. Crates are univerally wonderful things. ...

I would get me a newpaper and roll it up and swat it in my hand or on the counter when she jumps up! They absolutely hate the sound of the paper hitting the hand or counter. It should stop it after a few repeats.

I found hot sauce quite effective with a Siberian Husky we had years ago. The only problem was that I couldn't put it on EVERYTHING that he might try to eat or chew up! But it certainly provided an aversive consequence, which is what is desired for potentially dangerous behavior as is described in this thread.
