Maybe she can even be the replacement for the guy on the ravioli cans and become "Chef GSD". Sorry for the humor, just couldn't resist.

I agree with the training, gating, and/or crating.

However, I don't agree with the hot sauce idea. For one, that just seems cruel to me. Second, I think she'd be able to smell it and eventually she'll learn that when she smells that that she shouldn't lick it. Not to not jump on the counter. But that's just what I think.
But the issue isn't her eating food of the counter is it? Just counter surfing?

Uh...yea, I'm not one for the hot sauce thing either, and yea, she's just counter surfing. I pretty much keep everything out of reach. I just worry because she's growing everyday and she may one day try to reach something on the stove. Although she's still jumping, she does get down as soon as I correct her now and the DH is not allowed to cook anything on the stove until I get this problem fixed! He doesn't have a problem with it though, its either me cooking or the microwave! haha...

ut oh! you're going to want to correct this behavior right away! teaching the DH that its a bad idea to cook without permission is a bad bad idea

Here's my $.02.

Get a can, throw in a couple pennies and tape the top shut. Hide somewhere in the kitchen where she can't see you but you can see her. LET her start to jump on the counter then toss the can at her FEET.

Another idea is to set a trap on the counter. I take a couple empty soda cans, string some line through the tabs and then line them up along the edge of the counter. Dogs jumps up, hits the line, cans go flying.

The #1 thing you can do is to NEVER leave anything she can eat on the counters. Just ONE time of jumping up and finding something can fix it in her head to try and try and try - no matter the consequences.

I fostered a Lab mix for a while that due to an injury to her hind legs was confined to her kennel. I would allow her to come out and lay on a big doggie pad so she could stretch out a bit. However, it was difficult to keep an eye on her to make sure she wasn't moving off the pad, so I put a little cat's bell on her collar and when she moved around it would jingle (it hit her tags) and I could hear her. I'd tell her "pad" and she'd remain still. She had chews that kept her busy.

The point was I could control her just by hearing her - I could make her stop crawling off the pad because I could hear her first. Then I'd say, "I can still see you!" (even though I'd left the room) and she'd stop. Perhaps if you had some way to stop the counter surfing before your dog is able to get a good whiff of the counter, it might stop the behavior. Obviously this lab was on a lot of meds and pain killers so it was easy to control her verbally. But I was suprised that it worked the way it did.

The filled can is a great idea and works well with many dogs. Some will just stop reacting to it in fairly short order however. Do you keep a leash on her in the house? When undesired behavior crops up sometimes this can be helpful. If you can time it right, bait her with something yummy on the counter, while holding your foot on the leash, as soon as she jumps she'll get an instant correction, combined with a stern NO command. If you do this a few times, she'll likely get the idea. Make sure you don't look at her when she gets the correction, it will seem somewhat mysterious to them what just happened.

Treats, as you've seen can have the opposite effect and crating is a good short term solution but ultimately you want to train her to stay off the counters on her own.

I never tried it but I hear of mouse traps being set to scare the dog off the counter. But that might hurt her her toes so maybe the glue type traps would work better sticky feet are not fun.

You can 'unwind' a spring mouse trap so that it still snaps but not with as much force.

Forget the glue traps - you will have a terrible time getting them off.

I agree to NOT allow her in the kitchen at all. If you can use a baby gate for awhile when teaching this. It's amazing how they can learn their new 'boundary' be it when they put one foot in the kitchen your tell them to 'go lay down' and go to their bed in the other room or whatever the 'new' command is.

You want to teach them what you DO want, not just 'bad dog' for entering the kitchen. So a 'go lay down' with a treat initially, then random reinforcement, then no treat just a 'good girl'.
