I am posting this for my husband. His Czech import clears a 6 foot fence with ease and we've worked him with an e-collar and he responds to it at a higher level (we are both trained in properly using an e-collar). At any rate, we are looking for a higher level inground fence or suggestions for models that are stronger than average. I keep hearing from people who have used a inground fence set up on smaller dogs or softer dogs. I think an underground fence will work for this dog, it just needs to be one that's more geared towards a harder, more stubborn dog. Multiple collars would be nice as I have another fence jumper, but he only jumps on command now....my husband's dog NEEDS an inground fence, we've tried everything and he still runs to the neighbors to see their dogs. We consulted with a very good trainer and it worked for about 2 weeks. This is one of those unbreakable habits unfortunately.
Thank you, Nichole

Personally I would go with a heavy duty chain link fence 10x10 that can be covered and secured with another panel. Then the dog only has access to the rest of the fenced yard with strict supervision. If it takes a good zap on an e-collar I highly doubt that an underground fence will work for him.

I agree that the underground won't likely work. Our Sophie figured out the zap was tolerable for the great rush of freedom.

I see yards in the neighborhood with big dogs and electric fences that do work, yours just sounds driven.

Weber1b, I am with you....I did door to door work for a bit and saw some massive, hard dogs who were contained by electric fences. Now, I just need to know the brands or if anyone has a used one for sale.
Thanks, Nichole

We were successful with Invisible Fence and our VERY VERY driven Dal...she got out of everything! It worked with her, and she'd occasionally test it.
Anna's discovered she can jump our fence so we're using it with her now, successfully as well. I think it all comes down to the training. Plus, with the Invs. Fence, you can set up the "zap zone" to up to 12-15 feet I think, if not more. That's a lot of shock to get through. But again, I think it comes down to training about the perimeter which takes a few days or a week, depending on the dog. ETA: We only use it with the exisiting fence, I'd never leave my dog with just the Inv. Fence and nothing else, like a front yard for example.

I have the invisible Fence brand... works great... They do have a selection of different collars... a regular Collar with two prongs, another regular with 4 prongs... All the way up to a 8 or 10 prong harness they can put on really stubborn dogs... They can also change the level of correction for each type of collar...
Sounds like you already have a regular fence, so this might be a good add on for you... also I agree with a few others... training is the key, I paid for their trainer to come out for 4 sessions... Plus worked with Ginger between classes... Whenever Ginger tests the system, I do a little refresher with her of the boundaries... |
