Yes it does hurt! Unfortunately protection equipment like that is rarely for sale used.

Another alternative (and cheaper if you can't find used scratch pants) would be a leather apron. They make them specifically for SchH training, and some helpers prefer them over scratch pants. A welder's apron works too.

An old set of chaps or those half chap/half apron things farriers often wear can work too. Just throwing those out there as ideas since used horse clothing is easier to come by than used protection clothing.

You can find full leather chaps for about $50 new in just about any western horse supply catalog. I would also second the use of a farriers apron. It isn't really an "apron" more of 3/4 length leather chaps, just fit looser than riding chaps.

The Fishing vest works great!!! Picked mine up for about 15.00 Tons of pockets!!!!! (top, bottom and back pockets)

And I also just use my old Chaps..... See if you can find even some used chaps at a tack store one that specializes in consignment.....
