Venturing into AKC tracking has been fun, and although still nosework, I find it to be quite different from SchH tracking. I am completely enjoying it. One of the biggest differences seems to be the level of contamination of the fields. Fritz's track was literally in an area used as a dog park by the local pet owners, and prior to his running it there were loose dogs all over the field. Other tracks (TDXs) that ventured into thicker cover and woods had "kill spots" complete with carcasses. It is really amazing to watch the dogs work thru all of these issues.
Today Fritz passed his AKC TD (Tracking Dog). Here are a few pictures of him at work on the last leg. ![]() ![]() Getting his ribbon - with me (matching in orange), the 2 judges, and the tracklayer. ![]() And now, when everything was done, getting the prize he really wanted (tugging with his favorite toy) ![]() Christine

Congrats Christine!!! How awesome!
I know how much work goes into the TD!!! Not that I have done it myself, but just knowing people that have trained for it...

Congratulations!!!!
![]() Was that at Rock Cut? I was a tracklayer there last year (in the dogpark area) and we spent a lot of time diplomatically asking the people with carloads of dogs to go somewhere else until we were done. And we even found a (coyote?) skull on one of the TD tracks. Not an easy venue by any means. Wonderful judges you had too!

Yes, it was at Rock Cut, and yes, I could not believe the amounts of loose dogs. The field Fritz's track was in (and part of a TDX track) had DOZENS of dogs in that morning - prior to the tracks being laid, and then even AFTER the tracks were laid. Apparently this is the place that people take their dogs "to run and socialize"......and they ran and socialized before, during, and after the test......(sigh)
We didn't find any skulls today, but there were turkey vultures circling over the field, just behind some bushes, and another track at the edge of the park had a dead raccoon, and yet another track had deer bones scattered all over one area. Tough things to work thru, and when navigated, I believe really demonstrate the dog being committed to the track. I walked along on a test last week and saw a dog meet a snake on the track - NOT what I would ever want to meet in a test! The judges were WONDERFUL. They really wanted the teams to succeed - you could feel it. There were only 2 passes today (1 TD and 1 TDX) but they gave every dog as much time as possible to work through some tough conditions and serious contamination. Fun day, with a super group that cheered for everyone, pass or fail. Christine

It sounds like a lot of fun!!!
Do you have to keep a steady pace like in SchH or the dog can pick its own speed? Just curious, for obvious reasons I've never seen an AKC tracking trial
