Default Tracking Questionsre

Hi All,

I am not sure this is the correct place for my question but here it goes.

I posted the same question another site too.

Is it possible to do well on a tracking test by just reading instruction books. I have purchased two books, one by Glen Johnson and the other by William Sanders.

I have run into a problem in the Houston area with finding someone who teaches tracking.

I am beginning to wonder if it is a closed sport to newbies.

I have contacted various tracking judges, schd clubs, training clubs in my area, either no one replies of if they do, it is to tell me they don't do training.

Thank you.

If it helps you in any way, let me say you that you are not alone. I'm trying to learn tracking on my own, because there is nobody in 1000 km aroun who could teach me. All I have is to had assisted to a couple of SchH seminars without dog.

I wish I could have access to books...

Are you looking to do SchH type or AKC type tracking with your dog?

I would like to do both. From what I understand, I should learn schd. first then AKC.

Thank you.

None of the SchH clubs in your area would work with you?

TX and most of the south add difficulty to the SchH tracking because of the fire ants. Makes using food a problem. I can't remember what they use.

Ihczth - that is correct. I have not found a SchH club in the Houston area, within 100 miles that I can work with.

I have also contacted tracking clubs, breed clubs, obed. clubs and no one trains in tracking.

Thank you.

AKC tracking and Schutz are different in quite a few ways. We just had a big discussion about that on Sunday. If you are going to do both, yes, I'd start with Schutz because the dogs are required to scent from the ground and will lose points if they air scent (with their heads up). AKC doesn't really care if they air or ground scent as long as they find the article. Also, Schutz requires a down on the article and AKC only requires them to alert at it. If that is a down , a point etc.

Also, Schutz requires a down on the article and AKC only requires them to alert at it.

This is not true. In Schutzhund the dog is allowed to retrieve the article. And the dog doesn't down ON the article. If the dog indicates by downing the article should be in between the front two legs. Downing at the article is the most popular. I believe the dog can also sit to indicate. Everytime you check in the judge will also say "say indicate". Never give a specific way of indicating cause if you say down and the dog sits, you'll get minus points.

Hi All,

Update to my previous post. I have found several people regarding tracking in the Houston area. I am attending a tracking event in March to see how it is done.

Thank you for all your help.
