^ Steve Strom showed me the very basics of IPO tracking which is different from AKC tracking. Someone who's done IPO tracking could say what's involved. As far as I can tell, the dog must follow every foot step and indicate articles by downing on them with the article between its front legs. That's all I know about IPO. AKC TD: Articles only at start and finish, ~500 yards, 3-5 tuns, flag at start and 30 yards out from start to indicate initial DOT. The dog only has to follow the track, not each footstep, so my pup hauls ass when she's totally on. I taught her to down at articles, but all they have to do is indicate the article to you and you pick it up. I know a breeder/trainer/handler who's done both (IPO Nationals) and said AKC is more valuable as a foundation to SAR, which is my ultimate goal with my pup. I don't want to start a debate and can't comment on IPO which looks more like an exercise in discipline to me. I'm just following what one of my successful SAR mentors suggested.
