A trained cadaver dog may notice the odor of a decomposing animal but not follow up on it or indicate on it. We worked past one particularly bad one one day and I wish I had a picture. The tree killed the beaver who was felling it. The beaver was the size one of those fitness balls (took us a minute to figure out what it was). We were gagging; the dog peed on it and moved on. But I have had my dogs jump right over rotting deer caracasses without even noticing them.
There are forums for cadaver dog handlers ........... but they are closed groups typically requiring some form of authentication.

read previous posts, if they find something they are looking for when they have lots of miles in any direction with no tracks to follow (rain) it's generally called searching, i would have prffered my cow was alive not dead actually, the cadaver term was s bit of a subtle joke given the grim circumstances, apologies if i stood on the toes of the cadaver crowd.

no problemo - just didn't want my poor language choice to offend the good work of the cadaver trainers.
get yr point about seeing the unusual my dogs always are stopping and indicating/curious about things that don't fit the picture, they roam in bad remote areas and we have uncovered some strange things including a $40 000 haul of stolen goods complete with cell phone of messages of the whole theft, police busted the guys, a bunch of 3D rubber targets of animals washed down stream miles from an archery club..whole bunch of stuff all that did not fit the area. |
