I would like to get my GSD, whenever I get him/her, into more than just one thing. Flyball is a definite. I would also probably like to do agility, maybe OB, etc. Probably won't be able to do SchH, due to the fact that all of the local SchH clubs I've been able to find train on the same days/times as flyball. :/
However, can tracking be done by itself? Can you train it by yourself, if you have some guidance and maybe have an idea what you're doing? What venues can you do tracking with? (AKC?)

I would get a trainer for tracking to make sure you do it correctly.

(No pun intended...) But it can be done as a separate 'sport?'

??? Not sure what you mean by a separate sport.
Tracking is it's own sport. There are separate events in AKC and I believe you can just do tracking in SchH as well.

I bought the book Enthusiastic Tracking by Sil (William) Sanders when I decided to start tracking with my Cocker. It was WONDERFUL!!
If you are not going to be doing Schutzhund tracking (where the dog has to keep their nose to the ground ALL the time) then this book would be a great starter. AKC is the most common avenue. Link to book on Amazon:

Forgot to add - yes, you can do ALL the training yourself.

I think it would be an added bonus and extremely helpful to have a trainer help guide you through the beginning stages of tracking, but I do think that it would be possible to do it yourself with the right resources.
And I think that in Schutzhund, you have to have a BH to move on to just tracking titles.

Cool! Thanks guys! I think I'd rather do SchH style tracking, since AKC allows air-scenting, don't they?
I'd personally rather see a dog's nose on the ground.

Alexis - you have to do the BH to move on to any titles in SchH, right?
