Mutz is little less than 9 months, but we have been doing a lot of tracking and he has done very well. I track very similar to dogs 25 years ago in that the nose is down on the ground but it is not footprint to footprint. Still, he has nice deep nose.
Anyway, I now go find wide open field anywhere and track him to increase his awareness of other surfaces and smells. Two days ago I saw this big field that had been recently cut but was definitely thicket before it was cut. Hey cool, this will be new. So I laid out about an 800 foot track. Halfway through the track the thicket underneath turned to intermitten briers and thorns underneath, I paused and considered whether to keep forward in this or go back to just thicket. Well for a dog that I hope makes LE one day I continued onward. Out of every three pieces of food one or two would go through the compressed thicket and he would have had to dig it out with his nose in the briars. This was for about 300 feet. Anyway, he ran the track, and when he came to this portion, he stayed on track and kept his nose on the surface. For the food that was on partial grass and ground he ate, but the pieces that went into the thicket he skimmed over but never left the track, or raised his head. hit all the corners and you could se no change in pace or tracking result. What I was really pleased about was his ability to stay on mission with the adverse terrain change AND his figuring out that it wasn't necessary to get the food that was difficult and would cut his nose, without slowing up, stopping, looking back at me, or unsureness setting in. Was real pleased with him!! |

Hey folks, he isn't some kind of special dog, but he exhibits good adaptibility and trainability. There are many dogs out there like him, but many aren't exposed to anything but ideal conditions and so IF they have some issues often they aren't seen or are found too late. These are things I think should be flushed out before dogs are bred or they shouldn't be bred. Lots of good dogs out there....lots of good looking dogs on the outside also.
