Well Saturday's tracking session didn't go so well. Stoli apparently has intermittent food drive where one minute he'll like it then the next couldn't care less. Made trying to track frustrating for sure...the couple who was teaching us were very nice and gave us some pointers to increase his "food drive" and maybe that will help. Stoli showed he knew what to do as he did very well on his second attempt at the track but his third was just AWFUL!! Ugh so we are going to try some of their tricks to increase his food drive and we'll see if we can keep going or if we'll have to try something else

Try delaying feeding until after tracking. This sometimes helps. While your doing this, make the treats a big deal, and/or use more tasty treats.
Above all, make finding the final article the greatest thing ever. |

Karlo will not take food from the track...ants are his nemesis. He is very food driven, but won't eat an ant infested bait ever.
I would teach article indication off the track and then use them as rewards after the dog understands. Are you doing 3 short tracks with scent boxes to begin? I would do this first, and not make it difficult. Wind should be considered too when introducing a new dog to tracking. Food drive is important, but so are many other things.... |

I will consider wind next time more closely I honestly didn't keep track of it today as for articles we didn't really talk a bunch about articles so not too knowledgeable about that honestly. I figure we'll keep trying and see if I can encourage Stoli and use enough praise he'll figureo ut how this is a FUN thing for him.... |

The first track is always to get the dog to get into his frame of mind to track. Usually the first one is a forgetful one.
Are you doing SchH style tracking or AKC? Article indication is easy to teach, I'd start that now, on pavement so when you transfer it to the track the dog already knows what is expected. This clip shows how easy it is to teach...but I would do it on a driveway, not grass first. I saw this one on the side of the above youtube, my training director and his Mal Nero: |

Oh we are doing Sch style I believe as the two we were with stated they participated in Sch and didn't mention AKC at all... but that's just a guess on my part lol
