There's a tracking class I want to take with one of my dogs and in the class description it states,
"This course is designed to prepare dog and handler teams to compete for the CKC tracking title (TD)". Neither of my dogs are registered with the CKC. Bunny is a rescue GSD X and Jazz is a Shiloh Shepherd which isn't recognized as a breed by the CKC. Does this mean I can't compete for the tracking title and if so are there any clubs/associations were I could compete and earn such a title if we chose to do so?

You need to fill out this form to get a Performance number(PEN) but you can still compete with registered dogs with rescues/not registered dogs EDIT: I think I'm 100% off base here. Sorry! |

It says the course is designed to prepare the dog/handler to obtain their TD tittle through the CKC. That only means they are following the requirements for obtaining that tittle. It doesn't mean that your dog has to compete, be registered, etc. They are just pulling course material from this particular KC and tittle. Good luck! I wish I could find something like that around here!!!!!!

Elizabeth and Carmen, I read in the rules that in order to qualify for a PEN number the breeds had to be recognized by CKC? This would mean the GSD Mix and Shiloh would not quality for a PEN?
The CKC makes my head spin...haha. |

No, I don't think you can get a PEN number for a Shiloh or a Mix. You can still take the course for fun though if you want.
If you do want to train and have a chance to trial in tracking with your dogs, you can look at joining a Schutzhund club. Mixes and other breeds, registered or not, can compete and earn titles (check out Keeta in my signature). Schutzhund tracking is a different style than CKC, and dogs trained for CKC (or AKC) style tracking will have difficulty learning the deep-nosed, head-down, style for Schutzhund. So if trialling and earning titles is your goal, then I would suggest you look into Schutzhund first. If doing stuff with your dogs and having fun (with or withtout titles) is your goal, then whatever you feel is a better fit.

Thanks everyone! I'm looking to have fun and earn titles. I definitely want to compete. It looks like I won't be able to get a PEN then. The closest Schutzhund club is 3.5 hours away so although I would travel that distance to compete, I really can't travel that far to train. Has anyone heard of the North American Mixed Breed Registry? I just stumbled upon this. Perhaps I could earn titles this way?
NAMBR - North American Mixed Breed Registry I'm reading the blog now
