I have a good friend who works with a wildlife organization with snakes mostly, he is often out in the field studying diff snake species around here and making snake counts of rare species like the black rat snake

Sometimes i tagged a long last summer and we would spend hours and hours in the bush looking for snakes

when he found out i am getting a german shepherd he asked me about the tracking thing lol I told him things are not that simple

The general question was, have tracking dogs been used by wildlife orgs. simple ans. Yes, a registered org. by the name of deer search does exactly that. NY state was one of the first if not The first to start a program for using dogs to track wounded big game. A state exam is required by the handler and in my state, NY the license is good for 5 years. There are approximately 22 states licensing now. In NY it is strictly volunteer with no pay allowed except if the licensed handler tests and is licensed as a guide. It's rewarding although at times inconvenient. Not only game wounded by hunters but also by vehicle accidents will a licensed handler be called. If you are interested contact your state conservation dept. or search dec.ny.gov and a list of the other states can be found. I hope I was of some help and not too long winded.

I know there are dogs used to find endangered species (I think a turtle species) and one of Julia Priest's breedings has a dog used for detecting a crop pest, I think.

I have a friend who has a setter, the dog has been trained and certified to find lost cats...not wildlife, but I thought that was sooooo cool !
