Ris and I have never really pursued tracking before. But I think she might have a knack for it and, if nothing else, would like to work her nose a bit over the winter.
Ris is a mutt so she (currently) can't do AKC tracking (if they opened it to mutts, then we could do it). If I could find an SDA club, I would consider doing tracking there. I don't really have an interest in SchH-style tracking and I don't think Ris could pass a BH to get that far anyway. ![]() Just in case we ever do compete, I have a question about indicating an article. Is it okay if a dog touches the article on the indication? Like could Ris lay with her paws on it or is that undesireable? Is there a preferred method for indicating (sit or down)? Thanks! |

Depends on the venue, in AKC, a dog can do anything to indicate an article, as long as the handler knows their dog found it. They can stand over it, pick it up and bring it to the handler, sit next to it, lie down next to it, etc.

In AKC that is fine. I have mine lay down at the article because I want a clear indication. You don't have to declare how your dog will indicate though. They can touch the article.
Some have the dog retrieve it. Some the dogs dip a head, or wag a tail, or free stack over it.... many types of indication. I recently saw a dog give his articles a nice little death shake.

Jaime you can go check out ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America) also, they do tracking tests and mixes can compete.
Article indication is anything you 2 decide on. I just taught Havoc to down and Kayos just naturally sat for the article cause she knew she had to sit for the treat.
