How old are Chris and Leo?
You should expect to learn what a scent pad is. That will be the foundation for assocating the command you use to initiate tracking, and at least with me, where all the yummy treats are. That gets their nose to the ground. Depending on the age of the dog and the level of their drive, it could be a good idea to not feed the morning of tracking, but that decision should be made after the first day. Hopefully you will have a good teacher, and they will pick it up quickly. I believe tracking is probably the most natural behavior that the dog has that you will learn to harness and refine. Obedience is not instinctual, although there is a pecking order in a pack, and for those who do protection, it is also something that comes along a lot slower than obedience. |
