I know my breeder can help me with tracking but since shes about 90 minutes away I was hoping to find someone local to learn from if possible. If not, we'll head up to her place once a week and do it that way.
I have tried google but havent had much luck in finding a trainer specific to tracking. Am I going about this wrong? Would I need a "general" type of trainer?

what type of tracking?
Some trainers love it and have a feeling about it and some just do it.

I'm not sure how to answer that. I'd love to be able to volunteer my time to do search and rescue at some point. But I also would really enjoy getting out there with my dog and just learning to follow a track. I'm a total newby at this if you cant tell...
I was originally very interested in SchH but I realized that I was most curious about tracking so I figured I would focus on that aspect of it...

Try looking for "dog tracking clubs". Not sure of your location but you might find one on google, or contact any general dog clubs in your area and see if they know.

Yes, I go to a tracking camp in Northern Michigan that is taught by an AKC tracking judge. She has 40 acres of her own and there is also state land and a farm where we train.
Get on some tracking lists (yahoo groups), and ask or keep an eye out for tracking seminars. Occassionally, my dog training club has a tracking class, but that was once in 5 years. Otherwise, I'm in an informal groups of people who meet on weekends and track together. |

Our trainer is the President of the local Tracking club, she basically gives me a lesson, tells me what I am doing right or wrong then comes back in a couple weeks and evaluates.
So far everything is going well. I would say having people work with you (club, group) is the biggest help.
