is there any way to figure out how many paces equals how ever many yards? I'm training for AKC and the TD test is 450 tp 500 yards, I'd like to be able to figure out how many yards my training tracks are from counting the paces. Is there a general rule of thumb for it?

I'm 5' 10" and a slightly longer than average step for me equals a yard. In training tracks people tend to take a slightly shorter than average stride so I would do a few steps in wet grass or scuff it a bit and measure your average training step.

I know when I did AKC tracking... 63 of my paces equaled 50 yards. You really need to go out there place a start flag, measure 50 yards, place a second flag and then walk it. Then you can calculate the distance.

You could go to a football field that is lined and count your paces there. Keep in mind that in rougher terrain, your paces will be shorter.

I've found that the lines on a football field influence your stride length. So, do that with your eyes closed.
Of course, that could be because I was in marching band. And remember that your stride are going to be shorter tracking anyway, because it's always rough terrain. |
