Shayne,
Read the past threads There is a LOT of good info there. And also some info on what books folks feel are the best. You also need to decide which "style" of tracking you want to teach her. The SchH type or AKC type.

What type of tracking do you want to do? AKC, Schutzhund, SAR???
Different types of tracking call for different training methods. There is an AKC club in Medford that does tracking: http://sokc.org/?cat=9

AWESOME! Thank you! I am thinking more like SAR. But start off for fun probably. I have a friend who is a K-9 unit for the Sheriff's Office and does a ton of tracking. I might see if he can help me too...

What a great way to use Nikita's brain. Check out the AKC club too.

I just started and ordered a selection of books
I can recommend Glen Johnson's TRACKING DOG - THEORY AND METHODS http://www.dogwise.com/ItemDetails.cfm?ID=dgt127and ENTHUSIASTIC TRACKING: A STEP BY STEP TRAINING HANDBOOK by William 'Sil' Sanders http://www.dogwise.com/ItemDetails.cfm?ID=DGT205 The two books give you excellent basics and really go well together. I had another fun morning today working with 2 of my dogs! BTW- I think this method would be fine if you wanted to do SAR later. I see nothing in it that might screw your dog up for SAR. Although definitely check with some SAR people.

Actually the two books go hand in hand because Sil was accused of plagarizing Glens book. I do not think it held water tho. Sil credits Glen for many of the ideas in his book.
