I did a search and did not find the answer....
Does anyone recommend a good book/books to get started in AKC tracking? I prefer books, but would look into DVDs as well. Or can anyone recommend a trainer in the Ga/Al area? Thanks!

Did you try any of the AKC obedience clubs? They might do tracking as well or they may know someone.
I contacted AKC and found a tracking Judge in my area. they sometimes teach as well. I myself like the SchH way of tracking. I want that deep nose.

We do not have an "official" obedience club locally... I think the nearest would be Atlanta. Our local KC is more involved in conformation.
Georgia has 2 AKC tracking judges listed, both about 3 hours from here. Alabama has none. I see ytou have your TD on Max... if you trained Schutzhund style, what were the differences?

I'll try to help you look. keep in touch in private and i'll see what I can find out.
I had Max doing SchH tracking and had a very deep nose and when I started doing AKC tracking he started doing more air scenting. it could just be my dog though being he also does SAR work or maybe I just got lazy. everytime I tried to fix this problem the judge would keep saying "thats okay, its allowed in AKC"

The lack of nearby knowledgeable people is why I was looking for some written info.
Definitely, if you know of or can recommend someone for me to look into, just PM me.

So does anyone suggest any books? I did read an old one by Gary Patterson but looking for something a bit more "fun."

I believe it was on another thread, somebody recommended the book "Tracking Dog" by Glen R. Johnson. I went on Amazon and ordered it, just came in the mail today. Flipped through the pages, looks like a really good book, very thorough, lots of illustrations of tracks, wind directions, etc. All of the Amazon reviews were also 4-5star reviews. Can't wait to get started!

Glenn's book is still the gold standard for AKC tracking. You might also try Sil Sanders Enthusiastic Tracking. Ed Presnall's Novice Nosework is good too.
Dogwise has many good tracking books available. http://www.dogwise.com Ed Presnall's website is http://www.pawmark.com I buy my harnesses and lines from Ed and you can order his books there too.
