I just went into my user CP and changed my email adress to a team email adress that is nothing more than an email forwarder. ....

If you are so concerned in general about your email adress (I tend to use one for the inevitable spam from everywhere and another for person to person communications and never use my work email for other than work related stuff) then use an email forwarder.

IP ADDRESS? Any webmaster can find the IP address of any person who went to visit their site. How is that private?
It's so weird how this is crystal clear to me but others are all confused

The Privacy Rights associated with medical and financial and PERSONAL information are completely different from what we are discussing on this PUBLIC FORUM.

And this is, from the outset, clearly a PUBLIC FORUM FOR ANY AND ALL TO VIEW! So I'm not REQUIRED to put out my SS# and other personal information out there when I sign up for all to see.

So all the rights involved with opening a Financial 'Account' or other PRIVATE account just don't hold true on an open and public forum. Be like if I'm out at the mall and giving a speech IN PUBLIC, to then say all I said was a super secret and my rights to PRIVACY are infringed cause someone else just mentioned my speech. What???????

We are not a bank. We are not a hospital with medical details. We are not a credit card company. The ONLY information we have here is (brace yourself.............. I mean really

BRACE YOURSELF FOR THIS.......

The only information on this board, available to view on this board, seen on board (this is the hard part............) is stuff that YOU as a member CHOOSE TO PUT UP ON THE BOARD! The board neither asks or requires nor checks up and monitors any of what a member posts (unless it does violate a rule).

So should members think about what they post? YES! But because they are intelligent and realize what a PUBLIC forum, an OPEN forum that anyone can join, and anyone can VIEW, will allow anyone to read.

Yikes. So I just tried updating my email to nothing, and even though the field is clearly marked "Optional" I got this message:

Quote:
Please complete the required field "Email".
So then I put in a totally fake email- blah@foo.com and got this message:
Quote:
Thank you for updating your profile, wildo. Because you changed your email address, you will be sent an email to verify its existence.
Great. Since that was a fake email, I couldn't verify its existence, and I couldn't post! I had to set it back to a real email account, verify, and now I can post again. So no, you can't specify a fake email. You have to put in some active email account.

But to claim "it's just a dog forum people!" is interesting. I used to share this mentality. But I became a member on a slalom skateboarding forum that required your real name as your username. I was interviewing for a job and someone googled me, found my posts on that forum, and recommended me without even knowing me. I had never met this person. I had never talked to this person. And that person wasn't even a member of that forum! It was scary to think someone could google me and define a character recommendation based solely on online content. It might just be a dog forum, but that hardly means it is irrelevant.

There is a big issue of privacy on the internet, including on a dog forum.

And before you go all psycho on me- yeah, I get it. It says right in the rules (in fact, I quoted them) that all content is public and could come up in search engines. Hardly the point.

[EDIT]- By the way, I realize I have changed from talking about private content to talking about public content. I was just responding to a post. I don't think one can argue that public content should also be deleted.
Agreed.

That's why people have extra email accounts that they use only for forums, etc. right?

Do you really think every single field on your account is public? No. It isn't. While there is some discussion in this thread about public content, the real issue here is deleting private content (account info). That has nothing to do with public content. I am confused why you are confused about this.

Well, maybe. But that still means there is a personal email address associated with my account. So I don't personally see that as a solution. I don't think this forum (or many others for that matter based on a google search) are going to allow account deletions any time soon. You said you're cool with considering updating the verbiage in the rules. Thanks for that!
