Default Family Board?

I've seen mention from mods in a number of threads that the reason swearing (or pseudoswearing, e.g., "@$$") isn't allowed is because this is a "family" board. I've always found that interesting. Just curious- does anyone happen to have any idea how many active members are under 18, or where the board is officially declared "a family forum?"

...Not that I have a problem with the rule- though it does cause me to talk WAY more civil than I do at my day job. Just curious why the "family" card is always thrown in.

[EDIT] I found this in the forum rules agreement when you register:
Quote:
By agreeing to these rules, you warrant that you will not post any messages that are obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws.
...Still, I see no mention of a "family" board.

My guess, and it's just my guess, is that people of all ages own GSD's. and of those "all ages" they probably all have internet access.
I've seen some members on here proclaiming they are teens. And some who live with "mom and dad", and the way they speak makes me think they may be teens as well.
Therefore, with younger members and people of all ages visiting, it makes it a family friendly forum.

If you go back and read the Rules (that everyone has to read BEFORE joining and agree to follow) you will find ...

Quote:
16. Since this is an open forum and we have members of all ages the using of acronyms, replacing letters with other letters or symbols to avoid being censored will be considered as breaking the rules. We can not and will not put every possible acronym or modified word on the censored list. The use acronyms, replacing letters with other letters or symbols as a work around the censor rules we will consider it a violation of the rules and you will be treat accordingly.
(Bolding is mine.)

Thanks Lauri. Where are these rules? I saw the "click yes to accept" rules for when you register, but I guess I am not familiar with what rules you are referencing.

Edit- found them: http://www.germanshepherds.com/forum...uncements.html

(Just an FYI- you most certainly do not have to read those rules in order to join.)

You may not have to read them but I am pretty sure you have to click to agree to them. Though these days we are so used to downloading something to the computer that we don't bother reading before we hit accept.

Doesn't "family" speak more to content than age? I think it is implied that it is for the purpose of young people, but being a person with conservative values, I seek out the "family" label as well. I generally take it to mean free from content that is "obscene, vulgar, sexually-oriented, hateful, threatening, or otherwise violative of any laws."

I disagree. If you logout, and then go to register, you will see exactly what it says:

I have read, and agree to abide by the German Shepherd Dog Forums rules.
The registration page does not link back to the rules page Lauri referenced. I'm no lawyer, and I don't really care. One could easily claim that the bolded "forum rules," followed by copy, followed by a bolded "I have read the rules" statement would imply that the copy encompassed the rules I agreed to comply to. The copy didn't say anything about some other part of the forum specifying rules. But, you know, haha, whatever- not a big deal. I was just pointing out that the statement you have to agree to doesn't really mention the other rules page. The very last (bolded) statement probably covers it though.

Anyway, that's not really the point of this thread. I am satisfied with Lauri's initial reply... I just wondered why the "family" term was so often referenced when that term is not once used in any documented rule.

Welll I have recently used the statement and it was in the context of kids under the age of 18, not a "family values" agenda.

It is just not necessary to use vulgar langueage disguised with ****

And it is specifically called out in the rules.

I thought "Family Board" meant it is rated "G". Maybe "PG" if you push the envelope....
