But this is a GSD board. If they branched off and was a separate breed, it wouldn't belong on this forum any longer and a section would not be made for them. We don't have a section for Belgians, they are a separate breed and this is a GSD forum.

Unless Hondo's long hair causes his behavior to be different than the standard GSD, then I don't find it neccessary to draw a line in the sand.

But then again, I never really thought about it. I haven't considered that those 'ear puffs' could be pulling...ever so slightly...on his brain causing adverse reactions....and I don't want to even begin to think about what those 'butt puffs' are doing....

I'm glad we're all together - and this is a great forum - I've learned a lot and folks don't seem as judgmental here as on others.

My suggestion for Danielle would be to start a LC GSD thread and invite members to share and comment and post pictures if they want.

To me they are all GSDs no matter what the color of their hair is or how long it is.

I found this:
Longcoated German Shepherds - Welcome
There are special long haired breeders who breed for only long coats there dogs that have a more square appearance and much heavier bone and body plus a lot less HD.

I agree the long hairs generally seem to have heavier bone, however, I'm curious about the statement "... plus a lot less HD" ... do you have OFA or OVC (or other recognized organization) data backing this claim up?

Why call them "old fashioned" and "rare" LH GSDs are not rare.

Does anyone not see the future here? With the inclusion of the longcoats in the sv and the restrictions on breeding only longcoats to longcoats and stocks to stocks wouldn't it seem logical to think that recessive gene or not, schaeferhund or not, that there will probably be an official altdeutscher schaeferhund and a deutscher schaeferhund?

In my personal opinion, it is likely the outcome that the sv is going for. A distinguishable difference in the altdeutscher and the deutscher. Seemed like a logical question to have a forum for those who are specifically into the altdeutschers!

Number 4 has the new regulations. There will be a split. There is a major difference ahead for breeders, owners, trainers etc. when you now are dealing with basically 2 separate breeds or at least breeding rules. So...... Have a good one!
That will be interesting when one can still get a LC puppy from stock coat parents! Interesting registration and pedigrees will result.
