....specifically for would-be breeders, you know the type, they want to breed their German Shepard, its true bloodlines, no titles but related to Rin Tin Tin, attacks on command, and weighs 120lbs....invariably a high priority question on their first post is concerned with how much they can charge for a puppy.
.... I think the icon should be like this except the sign would say "spay" or another that would say "neuter".

Since it's better to be nice and maybe somehow convince those people to put off breeding, rather than hurt their feelings or make them angry.........I'm thinking we may not be coming up with that similie..
But I'm all about spaying/neutering our pets!

I definitely agree with the spay/neuter and the smiley is adorable. As you all know, I was one of the backyard breeders (but on accident). Everyone gave me their opinions, but no one put me down. I had alot of help through my situation and I appreciate it. Although I agree that the icon is wonderful, I think my feelings would have been hurt. Although I am the first to admit that I should have had her spayed right after I adopted her from her last family. I guess the smiley would work in the right situation, like the one you explained.
FYI, Sadie is spayed and the puppy we kept is neutered. I'm leaving breeding to the professionals. So much more respect for you all now!!!!

Just for sake of discussion....thus far in my life, I have had one male collie, and two female GSDs, all of which were neutered or spay, respectively. What I have come to learn over the years is that just because I love my dog, that doesn't mean that dog should be bred.

Especially cause no matter how much I love my dog, breeding her is no guarantee the spitting image of her will result. I decided a long time ago that with all the huge temperment and health issues in all dogs generally, GSDs in specific............ I'm letting those with REAL experience and knowledge in the breed do their breeding magic. I'll just support them with my $$$$ and get one of their pups!

I don't think that qualifies as a BYB. There are tasks I have taken-on, and on occasion life gets it the way, and I don't perform as well as I know I should have. You took-in a GSD, you knew spay was on the to-do list, and s*** happens.
I think there are two types of BYB...emotional and financial. I touched on the emotional type in my other post, and I can almost relate to them...they love their dog, and everyone should have a dog this awesome. The financial types are the ones we love to hate. They are looking at the dog as a commodity, which by itself isn't evil, but the stereotypical conditions inwhich the animals are kept make it sinister. I think there can be a blending of the two basic types where the common thread in most cases is ignorance. They are commonly unaware of health issues, working ability or conformation, titles, temperament, on, and on....
