I just wanted to throw in my little bit of opinion on the matter. I can understand the benefits to both, however I do think that I now rarely even go to photo contest threads to vote or submit a photo, and it is mainly because when it comes time to vote I can't make up my mind. I know I'm not determining the fate of the country or anything, but I will go back and forth between oages and look at all the pictures, then I will end up having 4-5 where I really like them, maybe not 10.... but not one either.

I think if we had 2 weeks to submit photos (really should be enough time), and then 1 week for initial voting (say choose you top 5) and the top 10 will go on to the final rounds.

If you do make 2 polls, the first poll would be just like the way it is now, but the second poll would only have the top 10, so it wouldn't be another huge poll, and honstly would take that much more time.

I'm just one of those people that take FOREVER to order at restaurants because I can't make up my mind then they have too many choices. :P

I agree with Vinnie, Jean and MRL and saying "thank you", but I think we will pass on this idea.

You missed the point entirely. Btw, the photo that is your avatar happens to be fabulous. Landslide not needed. It's just that if (I'm making these niumbers up) 100 votes are cast in total and there are 50 entries, the vast majority of votes go to photos that have no chance of winning. Also, the winner and runners up will have a paltry number of votes that (in my mind) make the win sort of weak. Get real... all of the pics are of our beloved dogs, but a lot of them are far from great photos... I mean REALLY!! So why not narrow it down to the striking and artful photos? Are you a communist? LOL... truly joking there.

Relayer,
First, thank you for the compliment on my avatar.
I’m not sure we want to get so serious over the photo contest. It’s meant to be something fun that we can ALL enjoy no matter our skill level with a camera. Doesn't matter if you are artistic or simply love your GSD and want to participate.

Sometimes the winner of the photo contest is not technically the best photo, but the one that evokes the most feelings in people.

So that's why it's hard to vote!

You're right, I was stating my opinion, but I haven't even entered a pic in one yet. As long as everyone has fun and there isn't some huge issue, better left alone.

I thought people might be interested in what it takes to do the CURRENT monthly photo contest.

First, the mod has to go through the thread and manually count up the number of photos. I usually do this 2-3 times because if you make a mistake you are going to have to start ALL over (and that is a PAIN).

Then I open another browser window and start the actual voting thread. I tell the software how many entries there are and it displays a screen with that many options.

I then have to switch back and forth between the windows - one with the picture thread and then one with the voting thread - copying & pasting user names, until I have them all filled in.

When I get to the bottom is when I find out if I counted right. If I didn't there's no way to ADD an option - I have to start ALL over. There have been polls where I've had too many options - the extras I just call IGNORE THIS OPTION.

Once all the options are entered the poll can be started.

If there were 60 members that voted for their 10 favorite pictures - that 600 entries that need to be counted and tallied. Even just 5 entries would be 300.

I have a hard time counting 50 photos - I can't imagine getting the counts right when we are talking hundreds.
