Default Suggestions. Allow editing, and other such items.

Great site. Needs some work though. Some sugggestions:

1. allowing editing, indefinately.

2. allowing the poster to delete posts that are off topic, argumentative, irrelevant...

The idea is for someone to ask a question and get an answer. Others opinions may not be wanted, arugmentative, irrelevant...

Thankyou

Hi and thank you for your feedback. Not sure if you're looking for a response but since I have some time:

1. Not happening.

2. Not happening.

The rule of thumb to follow whether it's on this site or any other public internet site is that you should think carefully before you post a message. It's the same manner as thinking before you speak. If you make an erroneous comment in a public conversation with a coworker, there is no way for you to "delete" or "take back" what you've said. It's out there for everyone to hear. Same applies on the internet.

Thanks for the suggestions, but my opinion is a resounding NO to both of them.

We cannot have posters just randomly deleting posts that they don't like. And we cannot allow people to continually go back and change what they said (which would happen a lot if someone didn't agree with them).

People need to be responsible for what they post, and think before they hit the send button. And as far as opinions that someone doesn't want, that person not wanting that opinion doesn't make the opinion irrelevant. Others reading may benefit from it, and we are all able to just ignore or skip over something we don't wish to read.

I wanted to add - if I post a question I cannot delete other peoples answers just because I don't like them.

They may be right.

Bravestdog,

If your still around please return to your original thread. Several of us have responded. While you may not agree with whats been written, many of us do care about your dog and only want the best for him as I'm sure you do as well.

Thanks,
Second that. A few of us have been asking about what you decided and how your dog is doing. Glad to see you're still reading and (hopefully) posting.

I agree with the first point. There has never, ever been a problem with people editing their initial post on any of the forums I've been to or owned. A bigger problem is the time limit running out and people double posting to say "oops, I meant _____" after people have already passed judgment on their sometimes alarming error. Typing errors do not exist in face to face interactions, and after writing what you meant is usually fresh in your mind and takes precedence over what you are actually reading. That's why in english classes they recommend you write your essay, leave it for a few days, then come back to it so you can find errors better.

Nobody is going to run back and edit their post a few hours down the line when 5 other people have already quoted and responded. I'd love to see an example on this forum of someone's post editing becoming a problem.

Actually, it HAS happened, multiple times in the past. Years ago the edit time on posts was much longer. It was changed to a shorter edit time because indeed people were doing just that. People don't always quote, many times they just respond, and someone going back to change their story is thus a very big concern.

Just as an example, over on the PedigreeDataBase you can change your post at any time. There have been threads where a user went back to posts that were a month old and changed them. People over there are smart to that and if they think a poster will change a post they quote the entire post in their post.

It does and has caused problems.

I think a bigger problem is when, say, there's a post about someone complaining about how their neighbor never walks their dog.

And then someone posts:

"I would never walk my dog."

when they meant

"I would never not walk my dog."

and 15 posts later and heavy judgment lashed upon them, they have to post again to say they made a mistake, while other people are still quoting the first post and bashing them because they haven't seen it's an error yet. I see typing errors sound like comments that imply the person is neglecting or abusing their dogs many times.

You can usually tell when someone has went back and edited their post after people have read and responded. Actually, you can ALWAYS tell.
