But why don't we have a mixed breed section for rescue? It wouldn't affect the pure bred section at all, seeing as people looking for pure bred could just go there, but someone could find a heart dog in a mutt posted here.

In the past we’ve always felt that there are plenty of places to find mix-breeds to rescue.
Given the nature of this board people will come here to find a purebred GSD. Consensus was that purebreds are what we can help. The rescue section of this board is just one small portion of this board. This board is for GSD owners and everything that might involve us. |

This is a German Shepherd Dog board that happens to have a rescue section. We are not a rescue board.

Not that I don't totally love the mixed breeds...and its not that I don't agree with you on a large degree.
I believe the answer I have seen in the past to this question is that this is a sight dedicated to GSD's. Teaching, learning, sharing, loveing, saving GSD's....and offering a rescue section on non GSD's takes away form that purpose. While this is not my opinion, I can understand why admin has kept it the way it is. Maybe with new owners...maybe you might get a different answer

In the past the owner of the board felt strongly about it - against postig GSD mixes. The usual response was that it was her board and her rules (this is the first time I hear consensus being mentioned), if someone does not like the rule they can go elsewhere. I wonder whether the new owner of the board feels as strongly about it as the previous owner. Maybe there could be a poll where members could vote.
I never had the sense that it was a consensus (maybe it was among the moderators or administrators) but I do not recall the members ever being asked or polled. I am proposing a poll to see how members feel about the subject. |

I believe it was the Rhaya's (former owner) wish. However, I doubt that she would put it to the members the way you phrased it. But to be honest, I can't find the actual threads where we had discussions on this.

Rhaya did not put it that way, it was the administrators and a moderatators that phrased it that way. It came up may times and whenever a suggestion was made to add a section for GSD mixes, one of the moderators or administrators would tell that this was a privately owned board and these were the rules of the owner. If someone did not like the rules they were free to start their own board and alike.
I am wondering whether the new owner(s) would be willing to consider adding a section with mixes to the rescue section. It would be easy to find out with a poll how the members of the board feel about this. |

There is already a wonderful place people go to already that has a great set-up for mixed breeds. petfinder.com so I don't see the need to duplicate their already very successful database.
This is a site about GSD's for people that have or want a GSD. For them to have to wade thru all the vast numbers of mixed breeds to finally click/find a purebred that ALSO NEEDS A HOME is needless if we continue with this board the way it is. For all those members who only think this is the only place to research and post dogs that need homes, here's the link for petfinder: http://www.petfinder.com/index.html And if anyone thinks there aren't enough GSD's to be listed here in rescue so it would make sense to flesh our Rescue site out with other dogs, I think you may want to talk to ANY of the members involved day to day with GSD Rescue, or check in with either our Urgent or Non-Urgent threads.

Here's my $.02.
For every 1 purebred (or really darn close) GSD you find in any given shelter there are probably 20 GSD mixes out there. Most shelters go by the following rule - if it's large and the ears are UP, it's a GSD mix. If the ears are DOWN it's a Lab mix. So now there would be MANY more posts that need to be moderated so there needs to be more moderators for that section. Also - how "mixed" are you willing to go? Which of the following dogs would you say NO to: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() All the above dogs were listed as GSD mixes on Petfinder. Who's going to decide which dogs have enough GSD in them and which don't?
