As an newbie, it is really hard and confusing to read certain posts because you all are so knowledgeable! There are so many words and terms that are GSD related in obedience, training, pedigree and posting that I have no idea what they mean. If there was an alphabetical index that I could find out the definition of say NILIF...which I did figure out, I would be able to understand the lingo...just a thought! You guys are so incredibly experienced and thanks for being here!

NILIF is a hard one. Nothing in Life is Free. You can Google NILIF and get a lot of good information.

If you have questions, just ask. We're a friendly bunch. I even confused somebody with SNG which stands for Show 'n Go - a practice dog show with no awards.

All the different titles still confuse me, but I'm figuring them out. Here's a list of a lot of them. http://www.justfurkids.com/dog_titles.html

thank you! i feel so ridiculous asking sometimes! I would hate to embarrass myself! I live is a small Northwest Ohio town with very little access to information about this stuff. my cousin owns the only reputable Doggie day care and training facility that I am on a 2 month wait to get into an obedience school with Rosco, and only for generalized training and obedience. Here is the link: If anyone can look under the "training and obedience classes" and tell me if it is appropriate for my boy.

http://www.howl-a-dayinn.com/

She is amazing and i love her dearly, but need to know if Rosco should get a more GSD training like i have read on some of the posts. Again, i don't know what much of it means, only that it in German.... There is no one else in my area in Findlay, OH.

FYI-Rosco is not papered but pure bread and he has been altered, so I will never be able to formally show him but would like to have him very obedient and socialized so he can come with us when we go places. We have 5 children and are very busy in the summer months soccer, etc. Any advice?

I think the training looks good. They emphasize positive training. If you take a class and you are concerned about something the trainer wants you to do, just ask about it here and people can give you their opinions.

I'm also a big fan of clicker training. It's not necessary for training, but I've noticed good responses when using the method with my newest puppy. You might want to browse Karen's site and see what you think. http://www.clickertraining.com/

You might change your might about showing your dog. I never thought I'd do as much as I do, but after training and practicing I started to wonder how my dog(s) would do at an obedience/agility/whatever show. I find the Rally Obedience work a lot of fun and so does my dog. But if there's nothing local, it can be a pain.

Some freak storm came through last night and dropped 10 inches at my house. It took me 3 hours to get home from work - that 7 miles mind you. This really is turning into a yucky winter. I hope it ends soon.

Seriously?!! We didn't get any part of the storm over here. Hubby drove to Cinci on a business trip yesterday but left by afternoon, and said he saw a huge car accident on the highway in front of him...a truck drove a car off and it flipped and caught on fire...guy got out in time but was scary.
Definitely ready for spring...Ohio winters are a GEM aren't they?

Just saw your edit in your post! Can I still show him even though he is not papered and altered? Boy, I would love that! I would drive to Columbus, Detroit, Cinci, or Cleveland for that! I saw that you did with your precious Doerak....

Yes you can! You take a couple of picture and get an AKC ILP/PAL registration if you decide to show AKC. There are other organizations where you just sign up, like CPE, ADPT, where you don't need a registration.

Doerak isn't technically a full German Shepherd, but the AKC gave him a limited registration as one. He also completed in CPE agility as an "All American" dog. He was an awesome guy - very smart. Balto is going to be very smart, too. I mostly show around Cincy, Dayton, Louisville, Columbus and I'm willing to go to Indy, also.

You never know, one of your children might get interested in dog training. It's a lot of fun.
