Picture from 1959

My mother pictured here with Duke which she always thought was a German Shepherd.

I scanned the original 2x2" picture in and zoomed in seeing Dukes ears seem to flop a little over, the square snout and thick build tells me it is rather a cross.

My mom says they got him from her uncle, a veterinarian and breeder of shepherds. Duke bit the neighbours kids underarm and was put down by the police.

Thought I'd share the old photo.

Let me know what breed you think Duke was?

Looks like a shepherd the tips of the ears look like they did not make the full stand.

Did some more digging and came across an article of my great uncle dr. Daan Marais who was trying to breed a Superdog.

That's very interesting considering he used wolves, St. Bernards, mastifs. The dog in the article looks like a St. Bernard cross whereas the one in your photo looks like a gsd cross - though perhaps that one was a wolf cross.
