Hondo and the Pig
I currently have two young feral hogs (50-60lbs) at my home. I work my Lacy with them. We are also fattening them up and will butcher them to utilize to mix with deer meat this year. Well, that's the plan. Not sure if I can butcher something I've named, but for now, that's the plan. They are in a large dog run, inside a pen so they can't escape and I remain safe while taking care of them.
When Hondo, my GSD is in the pen with me, he totally ignores them. They just aren't there. He'll sniff around the run, but doesn't give the inside pen any acknowledgement at all. Doesn't bark, nothing. Even if the Lacy is with us and he's baying. Hondo has no interest at all.
The other night, My Lacy, Hondo and I were taking care of the hogs. My Lacy was baying as normal and Hondo was walking slightly behind me, between me and the run. Our routine is, I go to the run gate and open it, my lacy goes to the gate standing next to me, baying and the hogs go to the back of the run. I pour in the corn and shut and lock the gate again. Hondo pretty much meanders around the run... checking for security breeches, I suppose.
This time, for some reason the sow charged the fence as we walked by. I wasn't ready for it and I jumped like I'd been hit by a snake. In that split second, that millisecond, Hondo caught the tip of the pig's snout through the chain link and held her.
So I had a squealing pig, a baying dog and Hondo quietly holding a death grip on the tip of the pig's nose. For what ever reason in my crazy head, I put my hand over Hondo's eyes and said, "Enough, drop it". He let go and followed me to the gate. He stood with his head between me and the gate as I poured the corn, then he turned and meandered through the pen checking for security breeches.
