While animals can be a great source of comfort, a lot of cancer patients can not have animals due to the risk of infection from cleaning up after them. You have to do what you have to do to protect yourself first and I am so very sorry you had to be forced into making a terrible decision on top of being diagnosed. Many prayers your way
