Dogs are out!
My sister is down for two weeks visiting. She isn't too much an 'animal' person. She's an ER Nurse and she's seen her fair share of dog bites. She is nervous around my dogs, so when she's down, I don't leave the 'big' dogs milling in the house. When we are outside, the dogs are with us. But when we go into the house, the dogs either go into the back yard, or in their kennels.

We are having a strong wind event today. My sister went down to the bay to visit some old friends, but due to the weather they cut the day short. After she was home a bit she noticed Hondo and Lonestar walking around the front yard. She called me, frantic on the phone:

Her: "The dogs are loose!!!! Oh God!"

Me: "Open the door and tell them 'Kennel'.

Her: "They won't mind me! Oh God!"

Me: "Keep me on the phone, open the door and say, 'Dogs! Kennel!"

Her: "Ok.....Dogs! Kennel!"

Me: "Now, turn around and walk towards my bedroom."

Her: "Oh My God! They're following me! They're actually minding me!"

Me: "Don't look at the dogs. Just go to Hondo's kennel and open it."

Her: "Gooooood Boooooy! Goooood Boooy! He went in his kennel! He actually went in his kennel!!"

Me: "Now go put Lonestar up."

Her: "Where is he?"

Me: "He better be waiting in his kennel."

Her: "Oh My God! He is in his kennel!!!!"

Me: "Go shut his door, I'll be home in an hour."

Her: "I can't believe the minded me! I can't believe it!"

Me: "Pansy."

That is so cute! Maybe she'll start to have a change of heart.

I suggest you wrap gauze around your forearms, lower legs and maybe your head....and use a bit of red food coloring for effect....when your sis comes in the house and sees you and is aghast, tell her Hondo and Lonestar must have been in their kennels too long and had some extra energy.....that should help her with her "uptightness" around dogs.

You are so calm and cool, I think you should have been the ER nurse.

Hondo and Lonestar you are great ambasdors for dogs everywhere. Lilie Congrats on your direction and on your training. Steak for dogs and beer for everyone else!

LOL! My #2 sister and her family came over last night, so we had a house full. My RN sister kept repeating the story, she was so proud of herself. We were teasing her and calling her the Dog Whisperer.

I asked her if she was ready to go out and feed the horse. She declined the offer! LOL!

In retrospect, my husband says my dogs are spoiled. Everytime I kennel them, I give them a little treat. So when I say, "Kennel", they'll go to their kennel and wait inside with that excited look. If you don't provide a treat they look disappointed. Even my daughter's Beagle will do it now. (He may be vocal, but he's a smart cookie!) You just never know when 'good manners' come in handy.

Turns out that the wind caused a dead tree limb to break off and hit the gate in the back yard. Luckily, it was an easy fix.

I am proud of my dogs. This morning when I was getting the dogs ready for the day, my sister got involved...even if that just means she stood and rubbed Hondo's head. Baby steps....

Thanks for sharing!! That's great that she rubbed Hondo's head this morning. Maybe by the end of her stay she will be giving them kisses. :)

My boyfriend's mom isn't an ' animal person ' either, so I can relate to this. One time when she came over, we told her to tell Gunner to "kennel" and she was completely surprised and proud that he listened to her.

Good story!

But I have to ask - does she drive a car? As I am certain she sees lots of trauma from car accidents she would be afraid of cars. Logic. :)
