Was at Petco today at work and a friend of mine was standing by a man with a GSD on a short leash talking to her. As I walked by I said hi to her and looked at the GSD and as he started walking towards me to sniff at me, I said "hi buddy" and continued to walk on. The dog leaned back on his leash and literally jumped towards me, snapping his teeth, growling, lunging and barking and snarling. I stopped immediately and just stood there until the man got him under control. He said to me: you should not have approached him like that". I said, um, I didn't approach him, I was walking by". He said" nobody should walk towards a dog standing up tall, they should crouch towards him to make him feel secure". I said " I have trained dogs and done lots of things with dogs, approaching one crouched down is asking for a bite".. I left and while finishing up, that same dog tried to attack and bite another customer, one of the managers and one of the workers, who were just walking by and minding their own business.
After he finally was asked to leave, the friend came over and told me that "he just got the dog from friends, was taking him to Petco to socialize and would be breeding him to his female and that she was getting a puppy". I asked her about hips, etc and she said" he has a passport so is fine with everything the guy says. First an idiot with no knowledge of a problem dog, an idiot who is going to breed more of them, and an idiot who takes an aggressive dog to Petco around kids and public to "socialize" him. Oh yea, the dog was at least 2 if not older. Good thing I could read what the dog was gonna do and get the heck out of the way. The next person might not be so lucky. |

I'm glad no one was injured. I don't understand how people can defend or redirect the blame like this, He's not doing the dog any favors by doing so. Hopefully someone opens this guys eyes before the dog does bite.

Times like this I wish there was something like a sterilization dart...
Though to be honest I'm not sure who needs it more, the man or the dog.

gee so what were you supposed to do, get on your hands and knees and approach him?
I dunno, people are stupid, taking a dog like that into a pet store is asking for a lawsuit

I agree that dogs like this should not be in a pet store. At the very least this guy should have muzzled the dog if he knew the dog needed to be socialized.
