Default Rin Tin Tin the TV/movie star

Clicking thru the TV channels this morning and came across an episode of the 1950's Rin Tin Tin TV series—the one where RTT is in the cavalry. I watched for a while and Rin Tin Tin had to attack a bad guy. I guess I never thought much about how they did this. There was a strap around the dog’s neck. The dog jumped up on the guy and he grabbed the strap on each side of the dog’s neck. He proceeded to jerk the dog back and forth to simulate a struggle while keeping the dog pulled very close to his chest. The dog was struggling to get free of the jerking so it looked like an attack but it was the handler manhandling the dog.

There was another scene where RTT jumped off a boulder onto a man on horse back. It was obvious the dog didn’t jump on his own but was probably thrown. RTT landed on his side on the horse’s neck and was pulled down when the stunt man exited the horse.

I remember reading that the original Rin Tin Tin was found lost and wandering free on a World War I battlefield. Apparently he was very trainable and was used to make a movie in in the 20's. The movie was so popular that it established Warner Brothers Studio.

the name was from some children's dolls in France...he and a female pup were found at a kennel that was destroyed by a serviceman...the original RTT was a dark sable, NOT a faded out silver saddle dog...there is speculation that the TV RTT of the 50s is not even related to the dog brought from Germany....there is a book out, released last year, with lots of these details

What I love is when an older member of society (as in, over 75) asks me "Is that a Rin-Tin-Tin?"

That always makes me smile for some reason.

The Adventures of Rex and Rinty

a 1935 serial of movies starring Rex the Wonder Horse and Rin Tin Tin Jr.

Sort of hookie by today's standards but WILDLY popular at the time.

Rin Tin Tin was known as the dog that saved Warner Brothers.
