Default Funny Perception

We had a friend over for dinner and he decided to go with us when we took the dogs out for their last walk. Everything was fine until I got the 'evil prong collar' for Casja. I noticed that he was pretty disturbed and didn't want to say anything, but he finally said 'you use a prong collar on Casja?' I just simply said 'yes'. There was silence for a good part of the walk and then he finally said ' I don't like to train dogs because it breaks their spirit.' I just said ' Not if you do it the right way.' I forgot about the whole thing right after he asked if the collar was for Casja, but apparently he was so bothered by it he couldn't enjoy the rest of the evening with us.

I guess he didn't see how she jumped up and ran towards me when she saw me get the collar out.

Btw he does have a dog of his own who is very sweet, but definitely could use some training.

I've heard so many people say they are shocked that I use 'that thing' on Casja because she is so nice and has such a gentle expression( and this is true). To me nice and minding your manners are not the same thing.

To each his own, right?

My dad is distubed that I use a prong on Rusty....he said it looks like a midevil contraption. Growing up we always had unruley dogs..door dashers, food stealers, leash draggers...my mom and dad always missed the training part. lol

My SIL uses a head halter for her GSD...I personally don't care for it but it works for her.

When it comes to training we have many tools at our disposal...all can become abusive if not used properly.

Looking at them, they do look torturous. Whereas they exert equall pressure, they really do not hurt, I have put one around my arm and tightened it and it really just feels like a squeeze. If it were not for the prong my gsd and my lab would never be able to leave their yard, it was a lifesaver for me.

I'm sorry your friend had that reaction. I'll fully admit, I didn't like prong collars just because of the way they looked and a bad incident I saw as a kid, but once I was taught how to use them and saw what a life changer it could be for a dog, I was a changed woman.

the prong collar did nothing for kyra when she was younger. only her tennis ball would snap her back to controlled walking.

Whenever people react that way I have them put it on their thigh for a "correction." After, every single person changes their mind. They see it and think we're causing our dogs some horrendous pain when it's really not. Now take a choke chain correction to your thigh...ouch!!

I used ot feel the same way until I learned a bit more about them.

They are less likey to harm your dog than one that pulls on a choke chain or even a flat collar.

I face the same stigma by my flyball people, they are not allowed to compete with them on (for obvious reasons) so people never use them. They all think they're evil torture devices!

They are only as harsh as the hands that weild them, like anything else!

I decided after I tried every method of training I could find and my dog still was HORRIBLE on a leash. So I went to a trainer and she introduced me to them.

Someone in another dog group I'm in said he didn't believe in training dogs, he said it broke their spirits and just turned them into brainless slaves.

SAY WHA??
