'Wrong' To Have Break From Dogs?
 

Since I was out anyway,I decided to swing by my vet's office to make a boarding reservation. I telling the receptionist that while I love the dogs, it will be nice to not have to worry about them for a weekend. Well apparently my comment wasn't taken well by the woman behind me who said,'If you don't want to responsibility,then don't get animals.' I started to explain what I meant,but saved it and just walked out when I was done.

Appreciating a break from your pets is just like having one from your kids when they go to their grandparent's. We don't take many vacations,but I don't think it makes me a bad person to say that 'not having to worry about the animals will be good. I do so much for them,and feel that I am entitled to a break.

I don't see it as anymore wrong than parents enjoying a break from their kids and there is nothing wrong with that when they make responsible arrangements for them.

You're being responsible by boarding them for a weekend when you need a break. You'd not be responsible if you dumped them at the pound when you needed one. That lady can kick rocks.

That is the problem with society today. They are too worried about what someone else is doing,instead of minding their own business. There is totally nothing wrong with what you are doing.

Yikes... sounds like she has a chip on her shoulder. I adore my dogs and couldn't imagine my life without them buuuutt... I love having a break every once and while when my honey and I can get away for a weekend. It's nice to come back happy to see them again :)

I love my trips away from my dogs. I even have reserved clothing to wear! However, I found that two weeks away is too long. I went to Germany and missed my dogs terribly.

Best trip ever was to New York. We flew into Newark, rented a car and drove upstate to visit our breeder, stayed in Saratoga Springs then went to Mohonk Mountain House and ended in Manhattan with my niece.

I always have someone stay in my house with the dogs. I'm fortunate enough to have a retired friend for days and my son for overnights.

Nothing wrong with it at all. Same as with kids.

We too have a dog lady that either comes to the house or stays with the dogs. A lot of the smaller boarding places won't accept intact dogs or charge the wazoo out of you.

What a hypocrite. If she thinks taking time away from your animals means you shouldn't own them, then what was she doing in line at a boarding facility? Picking up her dry cleaning?

I don't think there is anything wrong with it at all. The person who said that to you was just being a self righteous cow. lol

Anytime we've gone on holiday, we've brought the dog with us if we can. But on the time we wanted to be alone for a night or two, the kids and the dog stayed at the grandparents and were fine. I would leave them at a boarding place if necessary too if I could find one that was good in our area. (The dogs, not the kids. haha!)
